My pre order came today. It's so beautiful on the outside, monolith shaped, in it's clear glossy plastic wrap, I hate to tear off the wrapper and open it, leadt it might get a smudge on it. :)

Do open and enjoy! You must be an Amazon Prime member, because it doesn't ship for me until September 5th.

Taschen is also re-releasing the SK archives next year in their compact Bibliotheca Universalis format:

I am a Prime member...I still haven't opened it. It's so beautiful. I'm working up to it.

I'm thinking of opening this book, while Thus Spake Zarathrustra is playing.

The book is wonderful. My only criticism would be the flat finish of the photos. I would prefer glossy, sharper photos.

There's a lot of photos I've never seen, like the alien life form concepts (the dotted body suit on a dotted background is prescient of modern CG motion capture).

I don't know if the original Taschen deluxe edition used coated (gloss) paper or not. Like their 'Napoleon' econo edition, you get a lot for the price, using heavy paper stock and all the foldouts intact from the deluxe edition.

My only complaint is that the monolith slab format looks great conceptually, but it makes for unwieldy reading. There's plenty of gutter width for the text pages, but some photo spreads have way too much gutter loss. Since it's so inexpensive, I'm tempted to buy another copy and unbind it. The vertical slipcase would keep the loose pages together, like a 2001:aso poster book.

It's a stunning book. Bravo to Bizony.

I would love to see (buy) the original edition.

Yes it is strange, unwieldy to read and very heavy, but I love it.

I found this:

The $1250 edition didn't use glossy paper stock, either.

Last time I had a $1500 book it was this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Geometry-Kerr-Black-Holes/dp/1568810199/ref=mt_hardcover?_encoding=UTF8&me=

I liked the feeling for more than a decade and then, "unfortunately",
Dover republished it few years ago :-)

But I still own this one, it's actually really very good:
http://www.amazon.com/Bach-Four-Great-Toccatas-Fugues/dp/B00008PX99/ref=sr_1_6?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1442428330&sr=1-6&keywords=bach+biggs

It's down to $41.67 as I post. If anyone hasn't grabbed this amazing Taschen book as a great deal, now's the time.
