Last night saw Thunderbolt and Lightfoot and it got me on a Michael Cimino kick again.

The criterion Heaven Gate is superb.

A good mastering or a good movie?

Both. Originally the film was 5 hours long. The directors cut on Criterion, cut it down to 216 minutes, by removing many battles when the studio demanded it cut down to two hours. Those lost action scenes probably would have made it more balanced. Still, the film with all it's excess, is pretty remarkable for all it's detail.
